Lion, Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzaniza - this was taken on my honeymoon. The guide told us that lions, on their honeymoon, mate 70 or 80 times a day. You should have seen the look my wife gave me.

When I was camping in Botswana one night, a lion walked past my tent and did a wee not 2 feet from my head.

Gorilla, Zaire. This is Mahesha, a 600 lbs, 5ft 10in, male silverback gorilla.

We were led through the jungle by 3 pygmy trackers. After an hour of climbing over unseen fallen trees, hidden by the undergrowth, we were beginning to think we would not see one. Then the pygmies stopped. They knew a gorilla was around but were unsure where it was. The gorilla then broke wind and they knew exactly where it was. They hacked at the undergrowth to reveal Mahesha.

When these powerful creatures charge, they make a very loud scream as they rush towards you. I was told that if it did charge then I was to freeze and cower. Well it did charge and all of me froze except my bowels!
The elephant was standing over the carcass of another elephant. We watch for several minutes as the elephant stood silently as if it was paying homage to a dear friend. Every so often, it would gentle caress the carcass with its foot. After a while, a second elephant arrived and stood opposite the first elephant, with the carcass in between them. They then touch and entwined their trunks over the body. It was a really moving scene.
Hippo, Botswana - although total vegetarians, hippos kill more humans in Africa than any other mammal. They have a short fuse and will charge at people or attack boats with only the slightest provocation. However, they do have a nice side. It has been recorded that a lion was about to attack an impala, that was stuck in the mud, when the hippo chased off the lion and then helped the impala out of the mud.

Rock Hyrax - the size of a large rabbit but is the nearest relative to the elephant.
